Utrecht Demo - Featuring Allan Chow

First of all,  I would like to thank Utrecht and their generous and always helpful staff for sponsoring this great opportunity for local Artists. I think this is an important venue that give the community an opportunity to meet the Artist and also to get a sneak peek at their Artistic process. I am at the store sometimes three times a week. I absolutely love their products especially their oil colors. As a thick and heavy paint user, I find that their consistency and colors does the job and more. Anyway, I promised that I would post the final painting when I am done so here it is. Please read on.
I started out with a canvas with a drawing in mind. Here I am establishing my values with a monochromatic palette. This gives me an opportunity to redraw my composition if any adjustments are necessary. Most importantly, this process gives me an clear idea where the lighting comes from in my painting. My exuberant use of color follows after every single inch of white space is covered.
The process between my drawing and the almost finished painting is by far the most interesting. For this demonstration, I was indeed nervous because I was exposing the struggles and triumphs as the painting develops. I definitely had my downs during the demo but I think overall the crowd understands that this is no magic. I tried my best to make it as interesting as possible and demos like these forces me to think and make quick decisions after another. Three hours later, above is the painting in progress.
After another few hours in my studio, this is the final product. A painting that will feature in my next exhibit at the Kansas City Club (914 Baltimore) in July 2011, next month! Stay tuned!!! Thanks for tuning in and below are some opportunities to see me paint again in public! Stop by if you can.

Upcoming Demos:
This Friday, June 24th - Artichokes (105th & Mission) 6-9p.m.
Saturday, June 25th - Utrecht Store (Main Street) 1-3p.m.

2011 Symphony in the Flint Hills

The 2011 Symphony in the Flint Hills was held at Wabaunsee County.
I was just anxious to see what the landscape looks like this year. I took this image during sunset. Out of the entire day, I had a window of 1 hour between 8-9p to capture these images.
This is when incredible light and shadows reveals the magnificent landscape of our Flint Hills.
This took place roughly after intermission and behind and away from the concert. I happened to see these cowboys at work. It was quite a sight. Look at the natural hills in the horizon. Gotta love it. Hope you enjoy!
Heres the sight of the concert. Great music as always.
Honestly, I was away from the concert the entire time. Music was near by and I cannot resist seeking great images.
Beautiful cloud formations, beautiful weather this year. It was sunny but mother nature was kind to us with a cool breeze that cooled us off all day.
Congratulations to Mike Livingston, winner this year. The painting was awesome! Simple, subtle but packed with a punch of skilled colors and composition. An accurate portray of our hidden jewel in Kansas.
This is where I stood majority of my day standing next to my artwork along with my painting buddy and hero, Michael Duane. He has an incredible skill and style. This explains the crowd that he and his work drew. Thanks Mike for a great company.
Artist friends Elaine and Jamie. Both had pieces in the show. All inspiring works by these individually gifted local talent. God bless their gift to us all. We had 49 pieces this year total. Probably the best collection of artwork in the last three years. Great job to the juries.
Hey Elaine, it was great meeting such a warm, humble and talented Artist such as yourself. Your work this year just blew me away. Couldn't believe it was done in pastel. Looks like oil!!!! Anyway, all the best!!
Met a lot of familiar faces. Some from the Kansas City Star, mostly are Artists. It was such a blast this year!!
 Michael Duane and Governer Brownback.

Mike and I will be exhibiting together with Jamie Lavin at the Kansas City Club next month! It will indeed be a great group show!
Me and the Governer. He had lots of nice things to say about the piece. I probably gave away close to 125 business cards. Until next year!!!!

Btw, stay tuned cos there will be many paintings created in the next year inspired by this weekend's trip.

Dinner with the Artist-Hosted by ARTichokes and Room 39

Alright! I am going to let you all on something pretty darn cool! On May 26th, Room 39 and Artichokes in Mission Farms are hosting a Dinner with the Artist event honoring me as the Featured Artist of the month. What this mean is that you get to relax, have dinner and participate in an open conversation about my creative process and how my career as a fine artist started. It is a story of how Fine Art found me as I was searching for myself as a painter while pursuing a career as an Illustrator. It has been a life long passion of mine as someone who enjoyed drawing since age 5 and will be a life long effort to find my way to making a difference in the world with my gift in life.

A signature drink will be created specially for that evening and will be included in your three course meal.

If you would like to learn more, please visit ARTichokes to reserve or call (913) 322-9481

About this Piece

Modern landscape Artist Allan Chow's new subject matter further showcases his talent with a palette knife, applying thick impasto in brilliant colors found only in dreams. His latest paintings represent a process of discovery and understanding of change -- search for deeper awareness between the self, creative process and it's relevance in the world.

About the Artist

Allan Chow’s oil paintings are in several corporate and civic collections, including H&R Block, the Overland Park Convention Center, the Kauffman Foundation, Russell Stover Candies, and the University of Kansas Hospital. Private Collectors range from Kansas City, to Seattle, to Santa Barbara and Hong Kong. Allan has received awards from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, New York and Korea, and has been featured in the Kansas City Star on four separate occasions.

Represented by the Leopold Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri and Strecker Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, Kansas; Allan is a highly regarded painter of abstracted landscapes and of the Kansas City Skyline. In addition, Allan’s career has now branched out to include the San Francisco market.

Allan paints with a palette knife, normally with the application of a thick impasto. It is for the sophistication of his style, and the passion with which he paints, that he has established a national following.

Blue Grass Valley - Original Painting - By Allan Chow 2011

This is definitely one of my favorite paintings that I have completed. If you spend enough time in the Flint Hills. Those are the signature colors of the land during a clear day when the grass is still green from the rain. Other than sunset, that is my second favorite time of the day. I am still not sure what to call this painting yet but for now lets go with "Blue Grass Valley." A classic mid-western title.

Enjoy!
