Allan's Workshop at Artichokes

This evening, I had prepared a composition inspired by a Flint Hills' trip last year of mine for my students to paint. Flint Hills are not an easy subject to paint especially when you are creating the depth and also the complex clouds that compliments the rolling hills. Anyway, they did an outstanding job and here are some works in progress.

This workshop is 4 weeks long. We started our first class on October 14th. All levels of painting are welcome. I prepare a diverse range of subject matter for students to paint. Each week we spent time talking about technique and applying what we learn right away. They are encouraged to do what they please and I usually come around and help them individually if they are stuck but most of the time, they bring their own personality that each painting is different.
Students at Artichokes are provided a canvas and other necessary art supplies.. You just show up. Wine is provided :)
Visit their website for up and coming Artists demos, workshops and painting classes.
My next workshop is a ONE DAY class held at Artichokes on November 9th. It is around 2 hours long and the sky is our subject matter. Stay tuned!

Here is Dennis applying his under painting with some blue paint to establish values and also to cover the entire canvas with paint.
Sue has started painting her field by applying green paint and some hints of oranges as highlights. Her fav. subject matter is landscape.

Many of these students have never painted nor used a palette knife. Although with an open mind and courage to try new things will allow one to create wonders.

Until the next time, have a great day and happy painting.

Minutes from Hearts of Life Exhibit

The exhibit is open to the public all month of October. Their hours are Mon - Fri 9a - 4p. 19 Below is located on 19th street between Main and Baltimore. The gallery is below Michael Smith's Restaurant so you will have enter through the restaurant's main entrance. Address is 5W 19th Street. Text me if you are lost 816.699.0585.

In case you missed the highlights of the Hearts of Life exhibition, here are some photos. I managed to snap a couple of shots in between breaks. Thank you Anna Geilman and Tomas Hernandez who signed up to help me with the show that evening. These two individuals had qualities that I admired so much as individuals and I was so blessed to have them. Both of these individuals make a living helping others and their warm reception helped provide everyone a fantastic experience during the show. Everyone loved the work!!!!! (Janet and Silvino were among some friends whom I have not seen in awhile, it was great to catch up)

Barbara who is a proud owner of Voluptuous Cherry. She was eyeing it for over an hour. Thank god she was the first one there, if I had 5 of those for sale, It would've flew out the door. That said, the demand of the prints were incredible that evening.

Mango Lassi, 30x30 in the forground, one of the crowd's favorites. Also we have Love Triangle, orange pears in the background was the talk of the evening. It was nonetheless, one of my favorite pieces in the show.

Circle of Pears is probably my favorite because it reminds me of my hardworking parents who sacrificed everything to ensure their children succeed in life. My dad, a successful engineer loved what he did. It was his passion. A small town boy ended up traveling around the world and completing his circle of life by settling down back in his hometown. Lets just say that there is no place like home. He has seen the world, lived it and now I hope he retires and enjoy every minute of it. Lastly I thank my mom for believing in me and who suggested that I took art lessons when I was 5. Twenty five years later, Art is what I live for. This is a chapter of the beginning of my career. Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed the paintings.
A detail of I Love You.
A shout out to Brandon who offered his time to help me hang the show. Could'nt have done it without his expertise.
A quiet moment for the paintings especially of all the craziness of me running around getting this show ready.
This was taken 5 minutes to 5 that evening. It was truly a zen moment for me.

Last but not least, my sincere gratitude for Beverly, studio manager and owners of 19 Below for allowing my humble paintings to grace their wall. Their staff members were friendly and a group of awesome and young talented people. Some are Kansas City Art Institute alums like myself.
If you are interested in purchasing a painting, please contact me at my website
